General Aptitude Putonghua Shuiping Kaoshi (GAPSK) is developed by the Language Education Research Institute of Peking University as a new indicator of primary and secondary school students’ Mandarin proficiency. The result can be regarded as a recognition of candidates’ Mandarin ability for their studies or career.
Organised by the examination committee, this level can be taken by any K1, K2 or K3 students. The exam comprises listening and speaking skills, which are assessed through a number of games.

Q1. How is the GAPSK (General Aptitude Putonghua Shuiping Kaoshi) Preparation Course different from a regular Putonghua course?
The GAPSK Preparation Course is specifically designed for content tested in GAPSK. Course content includes: training for listening, situational dialogues with picture prompts, answering questions, reading short sentences and nursery rhymes aloud, learning pinyin and self-introduction. The course uses the official teaching materials. Our experienced tutors will give focused training on comprehensive Putonghua proficiency through interactive teaching, so that children can easily master the test content and test-testing skills in a happy classroom.
Q2. How do I choose the right level of GAPSK for my child?
GAPSK is divided into different stages according to the school grades, and candidates must sit for the stage according to the corresponding school grade. Kindergarten students can apply for the Kindergarten Stage (beginner level, intermediate level and advanced level). Before applying to sit for the advanced level, a candidate must have completed the beginner level or the intermediate level and obtained 60 points or above; primary school students can apply to sit for the Primary School Stage (beginner level for P1 to P2, intermediate level for P3 to P4, and advanced level for P5 to P6). Students in junior secondary school forms can apply to sit for the Secondary School Stage (S1 to S3).
Q3. My child, now in K3, has completed the advanced level in the Kindergarten Stage of GAPSK. Can my child obtain a certificate for beginner level in the Primary School Stage of GAPSK before starting primary school?
GASPK is divided into stages according to the school grades. Therefore, K3 children can, at our tutors’ recommendation, start preparing for the Primary School Stage of GAPSK early by learning the content to be tested. However, a candidate must be in P1 or P2 before being eligible for the relevant stage of GAPSK.
